Le Verrier, Urbain

Le Verrier, Urbain
(1811-1877)
   astronomer
Born in Saint-Lô, Urbain Le Verrier analyzed and compared the early charts of the movements of the planet uranus with observations that he conducted to support the existence of an unknown mass that was affecting those movements. He determined and confirmed (independently of the British astronomer John Adams) the elements of the orbit of a planet (Neptune), which had been discovered earlier by the German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle (1846). Le Verrier served as a deputy in the National Assembly (1849), as a senator (1852), and as director of the Paris observatory. He is responsible also for a revision of the charts of planetary movements. Le Verrier was named to the Academy of Sciences in 1846.
